Integrating Intra-Disciplinary Mixed-Methods to Advance Understanding of Workplace Wellbeing

Workplace wellbeing is a complex issue that requires an interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach. In Hong Kong, a multicultural and demanding work environment, understanding workplace wellbeing is further challenged by factors such as cultural stigma around mental health, limited access to support, and environmental stressors like SARS, COVID-19, and social unrest. These challenges are compounded by workplace norms, including extended working hours and expectations of physical presence, which can negatively impact employee wellbeing.

This study presents the development and application of an intra-disciplinary, mixed-methods framework designed to explore workplace wellbeing in dynamic multicultural environments. Initially developed to investigate wellbeing in professional services, our approach includes collaborative problem framing to address wellbeing issues from both psychological and socio-linguistic viewpoints, followed by mixed methods data collection with surveys and interviews with multiple stakeholder groups.

The framework was then further applied in a large-scale study of graduates transitioning from university to professional settings. In this study, mental health and wellbeing needs, together with skills required for the workplace, were assessed from the perspectives of graduates, students, university staff, and professional service employers. Triangulation across disciplines, methods, and participant groups was conducted to strengthen the depth and validity of the results, and support holistic interpretation.

Findings from the study emphasize the effectiveness of intra-disciplinary, mixed-methods approaches in addressing the complex dimensions of mental health and wellbeing in diverse working environments. We suggest that our framework enhances understanding and support of employee wellbeing in the modern workplace and in particular where workplaces may be undergoing change as a result of environmental and local stressors. We provide recommendations for future research on workplace wellbeing and methodological development.
